  • Where will I Wake Up?
The recovery from anesthesia will take a variable amount of time depending on the type of medications used, type and duration of surgery, and the patient. You will recover and awaken from the anesthesia in a specialized unit called the PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit). Nurses with specialized training, certification, and ICU experience, staff this special unit. You will stay in this unit until you have met special and specific criteria for discharge to your hospital room or home. This unit is equipped to handle all types of emergency situations.

    How will I Wake Up?
You will awaken drowsy from your anesthetic. You should awaken from your anesthetic with minimal pain and nausea. If you have either, ask the nurse for medication to help you. You may feel drowsy for a couple days or longer depending on your surgery. Sore throats are common after anesthesia, but should not last more than 24-48 hours unless it is related to your surgery.

Will I be Sick to my Stomach after surgery?
Some patients do experience nausea after surgery. This may be related to the anesthetic, the surgical procedure or post-operative pain medications. Therapy for nausea has improved recently. If you have experienced this during a previous surgery it is important that you let your anesthesiologist and appropriate medication will be given.

Will I have Pain when I Wake Up?
The majority of anesthetics provide for the relief of post-operative pain control. Judicious amounts of narcotic pain medications are frequently given during the anesthetic. When you arrive in the recovery room, you may require additional amounts of intravenous pain medicine. If you experience pain, let your nurse know immediately.
